”HOLON Trio is a fresh breeze for the piano trio format”

Reinhard Köchl (Jazzthing)

”...The jazz of this young trio, who all studies at the jazzinstitute Berlin, plays their

pieces with care. They respect the piece in an emotional way, and play what needs

to be played to express that emotion.”

Manuel Weber (Kieler Nachrichten)

Within the walls of the Jazz Institute Berlin the Swedish pianist Povel Widestrand,

Danish bass player Mathias Jensen and German/Nigerian drummer Lukas Akintaya

got to know each other. The musical collaboration was quickly a fact, and from this

the HOLON Trio was born.

The very flexible setting of piano, bass and drums give the musicians the room to

play and express themselves at the same time as the intimate musical interaction

creates the atmospheric sound. The intimate feeling between stage and audience is

for the trio of an essence. It's first when both part are present that the music comes

The bands flexible sound pallet comes in handy when dealing with the three

members compositions. All members contribute with their own compositions, each

one an excerpt from each individual musical universe. Therefore their performance

is very diverse at the same time as the common band sound connect the dots. All

these factors; the musical interplay, the original compositions, and the interaction

between stage and audience contributes to the experience that they are eager to

share. The young trio from Berlin is for sure a treat!

Lukas Akintaya (Drums)

After five years of classical teaching the German/Nigerian drummer discovered jazz

at the age of 14. Since then he plays in projects related to improvisation. Since

2011 until 2013 he studied by prof. Wolfgang Ekholt in Bremen. Since autumn 2013

he's a student at the Jazz Institute Berlin with prof. John Hollenbeck as his main

teacher. Lukas has an active role on the young german jazz scene, and he's

collaborated with projects europe-wide.

Mathias Jensen

The Copenhagen born Bassist Mathias Jensen started early in music school and

spent after high school two years at Fridhems Folkhögskola in Sweden, a well

known institute for improvised music. Since 2013 he studies in Berlin with prof.

Greg Cohen as his main teacher. His calendar is full with concerts around germany,

and he is a hilarious dude.

Povel Widestrand

The swedish pianist Povel Widestrand has a part on the european jazz scene,

searching for something of his own. After taking classical lessons, he went to music

high school and resites since 2012 in Berlin with prof. Greg cohen and Kurt
